Champions of Youth is trying to put together “First Period Packs” to help girls feel confident and prepared, helping them stay in school.
Recent data finds that one in five American girls miss all or part of the school day due to their periods. Columbia professor Dr. Marni Sommer’s research shows that students associate menstruation with shame and feel uninformed about their periods. This lack of access to period products is often referred to as ‘period poverty’ It can lead to missing school and other developmental experiences, limiting a girl’s potential and opportunities far beyond puberty. Champions of Youth would like to provide all girls with the knowledge and tools they need to be successful, confident, and prepared for all challenges.
